Yesterday.
Hi, my name is ……And I’m an alcoholic
Today is another day and yesterday was another day also.
We, in AA, try as best we can to live in the day, hence our AA sayings of ‘Keep it in the day ‘or ‘One day at a time’ or ‘Just for today ‘.
Very easy to do when everything is going well. Not so easy when life is difficult, when situations are demanding, and confrontation and criticism is
consumed in my thoughts and in my life. ‘Nothing, absolutely nothing happens in god’s world by mistake.’ Yes, I know that, but at 21 years sober, maybe life’s situations should get easier, but sometimes they don’t, They’re just as difficult.
I know today that all will be ok. I know I’ve been guided, helped and looked after for all my years in sobriety. The fear of confrontation, people pleasing and telling people things, that are difficult to listen to, are fears that can become difficult and painful.
This morning, I had just one of those situations to deal with. I’ve been putting it off for a long-time now. But talking to an aa member the other day, gave me the courage.
And the situation I must deal with is this. I am ending my sponsorship with my sponsor.
I’m moving on. My step one says to make my life manageable by dealing with it properly. I’m very clear that I’m not going to end our sponsorship by phone.
I’ve had that done to me a few times. It’s not a good way to end a sponsorship. It leaves a feeling of upset afterwards. And it’s annoying. Not the ending of the sponsorship, but the way it was done.
I was also determined to make this a good ending. I want to be able to walk into meetings and not be fearful my sponsor is there in the future.
Face to face is how we do our amends in steps 8 & 9, and that’s how I’m going to deal with this.
It’s all arranged for this morning. The advice I’ve been given is to not complain and don’t explain.
I’m not to use the situation to say what’s been wrong, but to say what’s been helpful, fulfilling and
Positive. It’s been a 5-year relationship as sponsor/sponsee. And good endings are what my program is designed to achieve.
And It’s what I strive to achieve in sobriety, and it’s what I’m striving for in my life today, in my new sober days…….
’The best amends we can make ourselves, is to rid ourselves of fear, guilt, Shame and remorse’
And in creating a good ending with my sponsor, that’s exactly what I’m trying to achieve.
One day at a time.
